FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
OVERVIEW
WHAT IS THE HALBERG MILE?
A nationwide fundraising event where schools across Aotearoa run, walk, or roll one mile to make sport inclusive for everyone—especially students with physical disabilities.
It’s about more than running a mile: its about raising funds and awareness so every Kiwi can can have equal access to to sport and PE.
WHEN CAN OUR SCHOOL HOST IT?
We recommend holding your Halberg Mile around 3 December — International Day of Persons with Disabilities, or any day during that week. But the event is flexible — run it whenever it suits your school’s calendar.
WHO CAN TAKE PART?
Anyone! Students can run, walk, or roll the one-mile course. Your school decides the scale — it could be a single class, a year group, a house competition, or the whole school together.

General
WHY IS THE HALBERG MILE SO IMPORTANT?
For too many young people with physical disabilities, P.E. can mean exclusion. The Halberg Mile helps change that.
Every contribution supports the Halberg Foundation’s work to give schools the tools, training, and confidence they need so that every student can play, participate, and thrive.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RUNNING, WALKING AND ROLLING?
No matter how it’s done — on foot, in a wheelchair, or otherwise — it all counts toward the same one-mile goal. The spirit of inclusion comes first, and schools can adapt the event to suit their students’ needs.
IS THERE A COST TO SCHOOLS FOR HOSTING THE HALBERG MILE?
There’s no cost to participate. Schools just need to register (and optionally fundraise). All proceeds go directly to enabling accessible, inclusive sport in schools.
